GRAND FORKS, ND (WDAZ)--May 15, a day to honor the police officers killed in the line of duty.

Tuesday is National Peace Officers Memorial Day across the country.

Services were held across the Red River Valley today to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Here at the Northern Valley Police Week Memorial Service in Grand Forks 62 names were read and a bell rung...officers who were killed in the line of duty dating back all the way to the 1800s.

"There is history there and there is remembrance that has to happen, that's important, I think for all of us and for the community to know that the officers are here, they're willing to help out and do the things that we need to do to help keep all of our community safe,” said Deputy Chief Jim Remer, of the Grand Forks Police Department.

And in our state, Rolette County Sheriff's Deputy Colt Allery whose end of watch was January 18th, 2017.

The Fargo Police Department and Fraternal Order of Police held a ceremony today as well - and for the second year in a row - honored a hometown hero.

129 flags were placed- each representing an officer lost across the country last year - including Rollette County Deputy Colt Allery.
